About the Japanese Studies collection

Stanford Libraries’ growing collection of Japanese materials supports the research and teaching of faculty, graduate students and undergraduates in several departments and centers across campus. Our collection of over two hundred thousand volumes covers topics such as history, literature, art, religion, music, linguistics, gender studies, economics, and education. It spans the earliest periods through contemporary society. The Japanese collection is not only focused on Japan; it includes academic studies related to East Asian history, literature, art, music, religion, etc. and is particularly strong in primary and secondary sources for the study of the Japanese colonial empire. The library boasts strong and growing special collections in the Japanese language, documenting the history of medicine, theater, music, Buddhism, literature, and art, among others. We are available to facilitate discovery and access of resources and to provide workshops, classroom sessions, seminars, and individual consultations.
